'Commended' for National Merit and Academic Honors
Student Achievement Recognized at School Committee – November 21, 2022
The Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School seniors who were named Commended Students in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program and those who earned academic honors from the College Board National Recognition programs were formally recognized at the November School Committee Meeting.
A letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC®), which conducts the program, was presented to seniors Owen Mathieu of Grafton (HVAC/R) and Jackson Staheli of Hopedale (Electronics & Engineering). Their high Selection Index score placed them among the top 50,000 students who entered the 2023 National Merit Program by taking the 2021 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®). Owen and Jackson are among roughly 34,000 Commended Students nationwide who have shown exceptional academic promise.
Certificates of Recognition, separate from the National Merit Program but related to College Board test results, were presented to three seniors who earned academic honors from the College Board National Recognition programs. At the meeting, Camila Ramirez of Hopedale (HVAC/R) was presented with the African American and Hispanic Recognition Award, Marcella Ferreira of Milford (Construction), and Natalia Vazquez of Mendon (Engineering and Robotics) with the Hispanic Recognition Award. This program recognizes academic achievements in school and outstanding performance on a qualifying College Board exam.
The Blackstone Valley Tech District School Committee acknowledged the remarkable achievements of the Commended Students and the College Board National Recognition program students during the November 17 meeting.
