It's Easy Being Green
Check-Out Our New Solar-Powered Scoreboard - October 28, 2020
Tyler King of Sutton is a senior in our Engineering & Robotics program and a Varsity Baseball Captain. Interested in a career in engineering, Tyler knows how much energy goes into sports and that using solar power can reduce our carbon footprint.
Tyler was able to take a peek inside our new scoreboard on October 23rd. With the inner workings accessible, instructor Brian Rhodes gave Tyler a quick lesson explaining how the technology works using solar energy to recharge an onboard battery that powers the scoreboard.
"Utilizing solar capabilities is an innovative way to use cutting edge technology to keep initial and long term project costs lower," said Rhodes. "The cost to run a dedicated power line to the scoreboard would have been more costly. Additionally, this approach utilizes green energy, so there is no power consumption after the initial installation. Real-world examples like this one are excellent opportunities to discuss engineering in the world around us."
The installation is part of our continuing sustainability efforts towards reducing environmental impact and costs, improving the health and wellness of students and staff, and providing environmental education as a road to green career pathways.
Tyler was happy to learn that a solar panel system will power the new outdoor scoreboard at the field located behind the school. He is eager to get on the field, score some runs, and help the Beavers light up that new scoreboard.
