Health Screenings

Massachusetts General Law, Chapter 71, section 57 requires that each student have a physical examination. Any new student entering BVT must have a copy of a current physical (within the last school year) on file in our Nurses’ Office. Any student wishing to try out for a sports team must have a current physical on file or they will NOT be allowed to play. Physicals are good for 13 months from the date of the exam.

Any student athlete who does not have a school/sports physical may sign up to have a sports  physical with the nurse practitioner in the School Based Health Center. Students should make every attempt to schedule an appointment with their own physician as soon as possible.

BMI Screening
Pursuant to the 2009 Massachusetts BMI screening regulation, screening for Body Mass Index occurs for all students in grade 10. BMI calculation is based on Height and weight. Parents may have their child’s doctor also calculate the BMI and send the results to our School Nurse, thus opting out of the school screening program. In order to opt-out, we need WRITTEN CONSENT from the parent/guardian.

Vision & Hearing Screening
MGL, Chp 71, sec 57 requires that each student’s vision and hearing is screened. Screenings are performed in the Nurses’ office for all grade 10 students in the spring months.

SBIRT Screening
Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment are implemented to keep our 10th-grade students mentally and physically healthy by preventing them from using substances in the first place and to provide appropriate prevention, intervention, and referrals as quickly as possible to those students who may have tried substances.
